What Is Built Green? Built Green is a program that encourages the construction of homes that:
Built Green homes are designed to provide homeowners with comfortable, durable, environmentally friendly homes that are cost-effective to own and operate. These resource-efficient homes are crafted to exceed building codes and provide homeowners with years of healthy, quality living, while protecting the environment. Less Expensive To Own And Operate
Good For The Environment * Built Green gives you the confidence that your home has been constructed with the environment in mind; helping preserve our valuable natural resources. The Built Green program emphasizes careful site selection, water conservation, protecting natural features and preventing erosion. Alternative Framing Techniques During construction, Built Green starts with Alternative Framing Techniques. Optimum Value Engineering, Engineered Wood Wall Framing and Structural Insulated Panels are advanced approaches to building exterior walls. Each technique has significant benefits over traditional framing measures. 1) Optimum Value Engineering Optimum Value Engineering (OVE) refers to framing techniques that reduce the amount of lumber used to build a home while maintaining the structural integrity of the building. 2) Engineered Wood Wall Framing The decreasing supply of large-diameter, old-growth trees has resulted in an increased popularity of engineered wood materials that use young, small-diameter trees. Engineered framing is stronger than conventional framing and has fewer defects. 3) Structural Insulated Panels Structural insulated panels (SIPS) are made from a thick layer of foam sandwiched between two layers of oriented strand board (OSB), plywood, or fiber-cement. The result is an engineered panel that provides structural framing, insulation, and exterior sheathing in a solid, one-piece component. Some SIP manufacturers precut the panels based on a digital blueprint of the house. This allows builders to quickly construct an exterior building envelope that is strong, airtight and very energy efficient.
